Adult Short Courses
Kidogo Art Institute runs short courses for adults on Friday mornings in the stunningly located Kidogo Arthouse. Our tutorial style teaching enables students of all levels of experience to gain from this valuable tuition. The aim of these courses is to enable you to develop your own style of painting and drawing by studying the techniques of a wide range of artists. You will be shown the best techniques of drawing with charcoals, inks and painting with oils, acrylics, gouache and watercolours.
There classes are delivered by practicing artists with plenty of experience in lecturing. Each artist has a different teaching style, but all will give you new and valuable information about techniques and processes that will help you take your work further than the level that you are already at.
In the class there are some very experienced students who have painted and exhibited for years, but the value the advice of our lecturers on how to extend themselves even more. Some are complete beginners and will be given exercises that build skills such as drawing, composition and colour.
We expect every student to have different experiences and to come to us with different levels of skills. Our lecturers will set students tasks and advise each person individually on what they need to work on.
If you are keen to develop your skills in portraiture, I would invite you to bring examples of previous work to the first lesson. The lecturer will then be able to see immediately the areas you need to work on. They may decide you need to improve some areas such as paint handling, or colour mixing, etc before starting a new painting. By the end of the course you should be dong work which is more compelling and is not simply a copy from a photograph (I’m not suggesting you do that, but many people miss the point that portraiture needs to be more than a likeness).
Joanna Robertson, director of Kidogo Arthouse is a portrait painter. You can see her work on the 2010 and 2011 Black Swan portrait prizes website (http://www.blackswanprize.com.au/).
I hope you do decide to try a term of painting at Kidogo Arthouse to see what useful tips you can pick up.
