BACKGROUND:
Deborah Bonar is a Perth based artist and graphic designer who is proficient in many art forms including painting, drawing, digital design, photography, printmaking, textiles, sand painting and glasswork. She runs her business, Scribblebark Design, from her home studio in Ballajura.
She has exhibited widely in Western Australia, in both solo and group exhibitions. She has previously been the recipient of the coveted Cossack Art Award and a finalist in the 23rd Annual Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award.
Deborah has been involved in Public Art Commissions including the Welcome to Country artwork for the foyer of the Fiona Stanley Hospital and the Munday Wall at Cooling Brothers. She was also a collaborative artist in the Nomad Two Worlds: Portrait of Diversity Exhibition in Perth during CHOGM in 2011.
Much of Deborah's artwork is inspired by the landscapes, plants and animals of the East Kimberley and Midwest regions of Western Australia, the heartlands of her Gija and Yamatji heritage. She likes to write stories, or interpretive pieces to accompany her artwork.
Deborah says, "Creating art gives me a voice and the artistic expression to tell my stories. I am a very positive, optimistic person and my artwork reflects this strong sense of positive energy, optimism, balance and harmony. I love to use vibrant colours and I love to experiment and learn new techniques."
