As part of Foto Freo 2010, Kidogo Arthouse is proud to be exhibiting the work of photographer Stewart Allen. The beautiful images in Driftwood: A Guide For Beachcombers explore the connection between people, cultures and the sea across five countries: Australia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, The Solomon Islands and Samoa.

Our seas are the largest single natural entity on the planet. Religions attach great significance to them; evolutionists say we crawled out of them; they have been muse to philosophers and poets. For Stewart Allen, the ocean is the big blue metaphor, and the images in his exhibition show what the sea means to different people in different places.

Stewart Allen has been a photographer for nearly thirty years and a keen surfer and beachcomber for even longer.

Having travelled widely (and somewhat aimlessly) through Asia, Europe, North America, The Middle East, across the Pacific and around Australia, he is now settled back in his hometown of Perth where he works for a major metropolitan newspaper.

Happily married and a father of two children, he lives near the beach - but never quite near enough.
