“To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.”

- William Blake

Have you noticed how almost anywhere they go in the world, people select similar beautiful objects to bring home? In beach cottages it is sea-shells, sand dollars or a drift seed washed up on the shore. In Australian bush retreats, a red-tailed cockatoo feather, a patterned leaf or a gum nut.

Tony Cunningham believes this reflects our need to feel a sense of place and regain an appreciation of the wonder of the natural world.

In many ways, the exhibition reflects Tony’s travelling a full circle in life – from amazement at the natural world during an African childhood, through more than 30 years of field botany and ethnobotany – and back to amazement again.

Be amazed with him: this is an exhibition that will make you see our world differently.

Anthony (Tony) Cunningham was born in southern Africa in 1957 and has had a lifelong, parallel interest in art and the environment. Since getting to Australia in 1985, he has worked on prawn-trawlers, as a builder’s labourer and as a gardener, and has lived in White Gum Valley, Fremantle since 1992.

By profession, he is an ethnobotanist, studying links between people, plants and sustainable resource use. He is the author of a widely used text-book on ethnobotany (published in English, Spanish & Chinese (1991)) and many other research papers.

He has worked in many countries in Asia and Africa and has had a long interest in etching, photography and graphic art. He started etching in 1983 and has since progressed to producing limited edition Giclee prints. An expert on the botany of basketry and hand-woven textiles, he assisted the Fremantle Art Centre with their 1993 fibre arts exhibition “High fibre diet”. In 2006, he helped FORM with their “Cultural Strands/Woven visions” project, which linked to the public exhibition “Woven forms: contemporary basket making in Australia” (2006). His photographs was exhibited in a joint exhibition with other Australian artists at Perth Galleries (North Fremantle) in 2007.
