Displacement – a sculpture and video exhibition by visiting American artist, John Mayo.
Sunday 18 April to Sunday 25 April at Kidogo Arthouse
US ARTIST DIVES INTO WA HISTORY
Visiting American artist John Mayo will host a solo exhibition of his works created during a 6 month residency in Fremantle.
Using the Western Australian history of maritime adventure and tragedy, Mayo explores the idea of displacement, history and loss through a series of bronze sculptures and videos. These works use the language of shipwreck artifacts to convey an intriguing yet incomplete story.
For this exhibition Mayo has commissioned Western Australian violinist and composer, Rupert Guenther, to create a soundscape reflective of the sculpture and video works.
Displacement deals with the idea of journey and the opening up of one’s life to elements they cannot control. The fact that we trust ourselves in the hands of people to convey us across oceans and worlds is something that we don't think about too much in modern times, but it is as true now as it was in the 17th century.
This exhibition is sponsored by Carnegie Wave Energy. This partnership is an interesting combination as it signals a ‘sea- change’ in our relationship with the ocean – using the sometimes terrifying power of ocean waves to create renewable power and freshwater.
John Mayo is a professional sculptor based in White Salmon, Washington, USA. His residency at the Henderson Street cottage in Fremantle has been supported through the Artsource international artist residency program. Mayo has been working in the studio of Fremantle artist Greg James.
Mayo is known for his large wooden and steel sculptures; many of which are in private collections across the United States and have been featured in museums, hospitals and airports.

Exhibition opening: Sunday 18 April, 3 – 6pm.
Opening times: 10am to 4pm daily, or by appointment.
