Self Portraiture of Local Metropolitan Aboriginal Artists goes on Display at Kidogo Arthouse, Fremantle
Kidogo Arthouse on Bather’s Beach in Fremantle is showing a wonderful display of Aboriginal artwork by local Aboriginal artists living, working and studying in the metropolitan area.
Centring on a collection of oil painting self-portraits of artists studying at Kidogo Art Institute, the exhibition includes the work of established Nyoongar artists as well as some incredible new work by emerging artists from all over WA. The second exhibition of Aboriginal artwork held at Kidogo Arthouse this year, the work of artists such as Sandra Hill, Lindsay Harris and Lance Chadd Tjyllyungoo, hang alongside the work of award-winning emerging artists such as Krocette and Ella Taylor, both of whom won awards in the Belmont Art Awards 2010. Also on display is the work of Deborah Bonar, a finalist in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Award at the WA Training Awards 2010, whose sell-out solo show was held at Kidogo Arthouse in January 2010.
The exhibition was hung in preparation for “A Feast of Ideas”, a forum and dinner party hosted by philanthropist and Director of Kidogo Art Institute, Joanna Robertson on 20th August 2010. Held at Kidogo Arthouse, the lavish dinner, drinks and discussion event was attended by the majority of the local Nyoongar population, along with leaders of Aboriginal organisations, mining companies, artists, writers, students of Kidogo Arthouse and leading thinkers in Indigenous issues. The event gave local Aboriginal artists the chance to voice their needs, and it became clear that an arts centre where they can create work and socialise is desperately needed.
The exhibition will be on display until mid-September, and we invite members of the public to visit and learn about the cultural activities of the metropolitan Aboriginal artists. It is time their artwork was given the attention which has previously been directed predominately at the Western Desert artists.
