"Two Way" are words I first heard from Gija Elders and Artists Paddy Bedford (now deceased)and Neminuarlin Theatre leader Peggy Patrick OAM in about 10 years ago. These dear and precious elders are from Gija Coutry which is in Bow River, near Turkey Creek in the East Kimberleys. I first met them through my twin brother Giancarlo who was working as a liason officer for them when they came to Perth International Arts Festival in 2002 to perform "Fire Fire Burning Bright "with the Neminuarlin Theatre Company. One night after the show, they invited me to sing with them at their Joonba(a special corroboree for men and women) . There they gave me the name Joomba Woman and i experienced the joy of Two Way for the first time.Perth audiences will remember Nemiinuarlin's unforgetable performance for the festival in 2002 when they performed the groundbreaking" Fire Fire Burning Bright" directed by Andrish St Clair. They told the ancestral massacre story of the Gija and Worla people which was performed in the picturesque Quarry Ampitheatre in City Beach in February 2002." The GIja elders have long desired that there be genuine "Two Way" connections and collaborations between non indigenous Australians and their own Mob based on respectful joyful sharing of culture. Two Way "means the two worlds coming together. As minds and hearts come together a third way is created. I think this is what Sufi poet Rumi means when he says in his poems " we are three".The elders say that only way for true reconciliation and understanding can take place is Two Way,where we share together as equals in love and respect . When Joanna said she was looking for a title for her exhibition I remembered what the Gija elders had expressed to me.and told her..She immediately lit up at the idea." thats it! "she said ! I am excited that artists can lead the way in what feels essential and natural. We can all trully learn from each other and be enriched from this. I commend all the artists and Joanna Robertson at Kidogo for leading the way. Blessings Kavisha Mazzella AM
