ABOUT HERBERT:

CULTURAL HERITAGE:

Bardi Jowi

BORN:

Kimberleys Northern West Australia

BACKGROUND:

Herbert started painting when he was young, attending art classes and painting in his free time. Art has always been a part of his life. He finds it relaxing and enjoys the feeling of creating something beautiful.

He is originally from the Kimberleys in northern Western Australia and likes to depict scenes from this area in his work. Having worked as a builder and carpenter, Herbert has travelled to many different places and he depicts different scenes from the ocean to the inland areas. In the Kimberleys, there is still a lot of trouble with cultural significance, and Herbert feels he has been able to learn a lot of the customs and traditions of his people throughout his life. Knowledge of the correct seasons for certain animals, fruit and trees, and learning about hunting and gathering on a seasonal basis is very important to him. He believes in the preservation of these things in his art.

In the past, Herbert has always sold his work immediately after creating it, and as a result he has not be able to contribute to many exhibitions as he has not accumulated a large body of work. More recently, Herbert has started to accumulate more work so that he can exhibit to a wider audience and so more people can appreciate his work.

Since enrolling at Kidogo Art Institute he feels he has had the opportunity to learn the ways of a professional artist. As a result, he has decided to stay in Perth for a year to complete the course. In the Kimberleys, he felt that coming from a remote area, it was more difficult to learn these things. He is hoping to start up a studio in Broome when he returns and teach other artists the things he has learnt at Kidogo Art Institute.
