Krocette ( David Prior )
ABOUT KROCETTE
CULTURAL HERITAGE:
Watjarri Yamatji(North West Aboriginal Man)
BORN:
In the Central Midlands area.BACKGROUND:
Krocette, also known as David Prior, has been painting since he was nine or ten years old. He classes himself as a natural painter as he has never had any tuition in art and is completely self-taught. He left school at 16, and trained to be a chef then a nurse. He worked over in the Eastern States for many years, returning to Western Australia only recently. Krocrette has painted all his life, and likes to gives the paintings away to his family and friends as gifts.
He paints landscapes mainly, to tell stories of the land where his mother and grandmother grew up. Although he is from the Central Midlands, he feels a close affinity with the Gascoyne/Murchison area where his mother was born. David pieces vary from painted Boab nuts from the Kimberley, to landscapes from the Gascoyne/Murchison area.
In the summertime as a boy, he remembers the beautiful colours of the sunsets in the valley there: the reds and oranges turning to gold. He loved to watch the dry riverbed fill with water at the Murchison River. Sitting around the camp fires and hearing the older people talk inspired him to paint the country where he is from and the traditional ways of life there.
