Phil first started painting when he was at school in Year 9. His mother encouraged him to paint when he was younger, and she is his inspiration.
When he was in his twenties and thirties, he stopped painting, starting up again after ten years, He had already started painting before he came to Kidogo Aert Institute to learn. Phil was the artist in residence for 5 years at the South Lake Ottie Centre. He is also a musician and he plays the guitar.
He often imagines past scenes in his artwork and scenes h remembers from when he was growing up in the Collie Region. He has lived all over Western Australia, mostly in country towns. He has always been around rivers so he often depicts them in his work.
