The idea behind “TwoWay” came from artist and Kidogo Art Institute founder, Joanna Robertson. Last year, when she invited Aboriginal artist, Krocette, to paint a story on a large narrative piece she was working on, she was impressed at how the painting took on a life that could only be possible where intense trust existed.
Joanna was an award-winning artist who had exhibited in Europe and the USA before moving to Perth 22 years ago. In the past year Joanna has collaborated with several indigenous artists on major works. The artwork that resulted would never have been possible had that collaboration not happened. Now she wanted to invite other artists that she respected to go out on a limb, reach beyond their comfort zone, trust another (in most cases, unknown) person, to make an artwork with them – to created something totally new… what form would it take…?
To add further interest, she did not only invite visual artists – The works in this show have been created by teams that involve a storyteller, musicians, playwrights, photographers, a documentary maker, songwriters, printmakers, two textile artists, a sculptor, a landscape designer, and a cluster of really amazing painters!
The exhibitors include some of Australia’s best-known names in the arts:

All along this project has depended on deep conversation, the journey, listening, trying to understand, trust and doubt, elation and frustration, tragedy and joy, juggling hectic schedules to meet up, coffee and more coffees, and only after many, many months – this body of work that you will now, at last, get the chance to see: “TwoWay” – The Exhibition, The Journey, The Conversation.
